Nashville (AP) -- A bill advancing in the Tennessee House would expand the state sex offender registry to include the names of all offenders, regardless of when the offense took place.
The measure sponsored by Representative Charles Curtiss of Sparta was intended to capture the names of people living in Tennessee whose names had been placed on other states' registries before Tennessee created one in 1995.
The bill was amended Wednesday to include any sex offenders currently living in Tennessee who were convicted of qualifying sex crimes at any time, and in any state.
House Judiciary Chairman Rob Briley of Nashville said a US Supreme Court decision found that retroactive registration is not considered additional punishment for sex offenders.
