KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) - Runners, swimmers and even those without athletic gifts are making last minute changes to a spring time 5k to raise money for one of their own.
Former Vols swimmers Michael and Nicole Gross were crossing the finish line at the Boston Marathon when the bombs went off. Michael sustained minor injuries. Nicole was left hospitalized, facing several surgeries.
"When I first found out about Boston, I was shaken by it. But then knowing people and hving a relationship with some of the people injured, it really hit home. Made it even more real and obviously very painful," said UT assistant swim coach Lance Asti.
The 5k for the Revolution 3 Triathlon quickly became the Knoxville Glow 5k. 100 percent of the proceeds will be sent to Nicole to help with her medical costs.
Right now 700 people are registered, but organizers hope for more.
"That's my hope is that we get 4,000 runners to come out here. It's going to be a fun and family friendly envioronment... glow sticks so this is a great and fun event for Knoxville and now with this cause it's an even better reason to come out that night," said Eric Bell.
Nicole's friend former olympian Davis Tarwater has also helped to spread the word.
"As someone that values an active lifestyle I know it'll be hard, but what we can do in this community is rally around someone to give her the space she needs to recover and help her return to 100-percent," said Tarwater.
Check in for the 5k will start at 6 p.m. in World's Fair Park on Friday, May 3rd. The race kicks off at 8:20. Registration is $40. A 1 mile fun run costs $20.
The race will be followed by an awards and an outdoor movie in the park.
