Knoxville (WVLT) -- A man was killed early this morning when his Ford Expedition overturned near the intersection of North Central Street and Metroplex Court.
According to KPD, at just after 1 A.M. an officer pulled the SUV over after he noticed it was blocking traffic at the intersection of Jackson Avenue and North Central.
When the SUV pulled over it side-swiped a car that was parallel parked on the side of the road. The officer approached the SUV and took the driver's license. On the way back to his cruiser he decided to checked the side swiped car for damaged. At that point the SUV fled the scene.
Several blocks away another police officer was at the Time Out Deli at the intersection of North Central and Woodland when he observed the same Ford Expedition traveling at a high rate of speed and passing cars in the turn lane. The officer went back to his cruiser and started in the direction the SUV was traveling, he was a few blocks behind.
When that officer came up on the intersection of North Central and Metroplex he found the SUV had flipped over and was resting on its top. Paramedics responded and the driver was taken to UT Medical with severe arm trauma and a fractured jaw.
He was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the hospital.
