Kabul, Afghanistan (WVLT) - Violence strikes too close for comfort for Vice President Dick Cheney in Afghanistan.
Vice President Cheney was in the country to talk to Afghan President Hamid Karzai about the growing threat from the Taliban and Al-Qaeda in the country when a suicide bomber blew himself up near the gates of the Bagram air base early this morning.
Afghan officials say Cheney was safely inside the base during the blast and was not hurt.
They also say it doesn't appear the vice president was the target of the explosion.
The blast killed at least 19 people and injured several others.
The Taliban has claimed responsibility for the bombing.
Cheney made the surprise trip based on worries that Taliban and Al-Qaida resistance might be building up to more attacks in the spring.
