Knoxville (AP) -- Of 25 industrial sites considered by Toyota for a new assembly plant, two of the three finalists were certified "megasites" by the Tennessee Valley Authority's Economic Development Program.
And one of them, a site near Tupelo, Mississippi, was the winner announced by Toyota for the sport utility vehicle plant.
TVA official John Bradley says the choice gives credibility to the program, which began in 2004.
The megasite program uses site-selection experts to identify large tracts in the Tennessee Valley suitable for automotive manufacturers and related industries.
TVA has six more megasites on inventory, in Clarksville.; Haywood County; Crockett County; Columbus, Mississippi; Hopkinsville, Kentucky; and Chattanooga, which was a finalist for the Toyota plant.
