Knoxville (WVLT) - Gresham Middle School students are taking advantage of an extended weekend, all thanks to a water main break.
About 7:15 Monday morning, school officials noticed there was no heat in the school and certain parts had no power.
After a check, crews found almost six feet of water in the boiler room.
Right now, crews are pumping water from the room, but the source of the water main break has not been identified.
Principal Donna Parker says within 30 minutes of the discovery, everyone was out of the building and on their way home. She credits everyone for their quick action.
"People Downtown acted quickly and responsibly. This staff acted quickly and responsibly. The students did what they needed to do so that we could get everybody home," Principal Parker says.
Crews are still assessing the damage. No word yet if the school will be back open Tuesday.
