Anderson County (WVLT) - A tractor trailer plunged off a bridge in Anderson County this morning, leaving the truck mangled and the driver seriously injured.
The Tennessee Highway Patrol says the tractor trailer, driven by Bruce Culbreth, went off I-75 northbound at the Clinch River Bridge near Lake City at about 2:00 a.m.
They say cab broke away from the trailer, went off the bridge, down a steep embankment, and landed in some water.
Rescue crews had to repel off the bridge to get to Culbreth and bring him back up to paramedics, which took several hours.
Sgt. Bobby Celvenger with the Tennessee Highway Patrol says the driver has serious injuries.
"He's been transported by LifeStar to UT Medical Center, talked to one of the emergency medical personnel and they said he's in very serious condition at this time."
Tim Green was just ahead of the tractor trailer on I-75 and says he saw the accident happen in his rear-view mirror. "We turned back around and we couldn't help him and called 911 and sit back here and see what was going on," he said.
Bruce Culbreth remains at UT Medical Center in Stable condition. Hospital officials say he has been transferred to a regular room.
