Knoxville (WVLT) - Knoxville Police are still trying to find out what led to the shooting death of an 18-year old Knoxville man.
Thirty-one-year-old Jason Eric McLean is charged with murdering 18-year-old Sean Powell.
Volunteer TV's Kim Bedford spoke with McLean's father, who says his daughter-in-law is partially responsible for Powell's death.
KPD is confirming Powell and McLean's wife, Erin had a relationship, but they will not go into details of it yet.
Police found Powell dead in his car, in front of McLean's house on Coker Avenue Saturday.
Officials have also confirmed Erin McLean was an intern at West High School as a UT grad student and Powell was a student at West until November of 2006.
Norman McLean says a love triangle led to Powell's death and put his son in jail.
"She was having an affair with him," Norman Mclean says his son, Jason Eric Mclean told him his wife, Erin, had been having an affair with 18-year-old Sean Powell for about three months. "He was telling me for a couple months what was going on. He was trying to save his marriage. He found out what was going on behind his back."
Norman says his son wanted to work it out for their two young children. "He found out the boy had been coming by his house and he told his wife he didn't want the boy coming on the property anymore."
But Saturday night, police say Powell was sitting in his car outside McLean's house, when Jason shot and killed him through the driver's side window.
"He asked for police help to get the boy out and I've talked to Eric personally and he said the rest of what happened was a blur," Norman says. "I think the boy had a nervous breakdown or something."
"We know there was a relationship between the victim and the suspect's wife. We can't go into details on what type of relationship, but they did know each other," says Darrell DeBusk, KPD Spokesman.
Officials say Erin Mclean was an intern at West High School for UT this school year and Powell was enrolled as a senior at West until November of '06.
"We believe they first met each other at a school," DeBusk says.
Jason is a senior at UT and Norman says Erin should be the one in jail right now.
"If Erin had acted as a professional in her position as a high school teacher, Sean Powell would be alive today," Norman says.
Erin McLean has been put on indefinite leave by the Knox County School District, pending the investigation.
Their two children are currently with Erin, but Norman says he will fight for partial custody.
Jason McLean will be in court Tuesday morning for his first hearing.
