Andersonville (WVLT) - One Andersonville firefighter, injured badly one week ago, is on the road to recovery.
Derrick Phillips suffered second and third degree burns on his face and severe smoke inhalation after becoming disoriented while fighting a trailer fire at Woodhaven Park Trailer Court.
Phillips has been recovering at UT Medical Center, and Saturday they took him off the ventilator. He's now able to talk and interact with his visitors.
"Apparently through the night, he's called quite a few people and woke them up, but that's okay, we don't mind. Six o-clock this morning he was calling people waking them up talking, but that's ok. He can do it anytime he wants to. Nobody cares a bit. We're just glad to talk to him, glad he's able to sit up and call us," Andersonville Fire Chief Mark Dison said.
Doctors expect Phillips to go home this week. His family asks for your prayers and support.
The volunteer fire department is holding a Chili Supper and Pie Auction for Derrick, his wife, Casey and their two little boys. The fundraiser is March 31st at five in the Anderson County High School Cafeteria. You can buy tickets at the door or from the firefighters.
