Knoxville (WVLT) - New details are being released about a bizarre Knoxville love triangle that ended with an apparent murder.

Police say one-time student teacher Erin McLean, who is believed to have had an affair with an 18-year-old west high school student, tried to commit suicide.

Volunteer TV's Allison Hunt joins us from the newsroom with more details.

Nashville police say they were called to Erin McLean's mother's home there in Davidson County on March 15th.

Officers say it appeared 29-year-old Erin McLean had attempted suicide.

Neighbors of the McLean home here in Knoxville say this is just another bad situation for the family.

Neighbors on Coker Avenue are still in shock over 31-year-old Eric McLean being charged with the murder of 18-year-old Sean Powell.

"He's just a good, outgoing guy. He seemed like he takes everything easy, he's just easy and laid back," says neighbor Geneva Dyer.

McLean is charged with shooting Powell after the former West High student refused to leave the front of the McLean home on March 11th.

Now, Geneva Dyer says neighbors have been dealt another blow by reports that McLean's wife, Erin McLean, the woman at the center of this alleged love triangle, tried to take her own life. "Just a bad situation gone real bad."

Police report's say Nashville firefighters responded to her mother's Nashville home for a suicidal person and had to kick in the bathroom door.

Nashville authorities had been called by Knoxville Police who were notified by concerned family members of Mrs. McLean.

McLean was rushed to a Nashville hospital, then treated and released for an apparent drug overdose.

"Just adding up, one after another," Dyer says.

Now Dyer says she worries for the couple's two children. "They were well behaved children and real smart children.//I feel for their safety, I'm not sure that they're safe with their mother right now."

We spoke with Eric McLean's parents who say the children are in Nashville with their mother and grandmother.

Eric's parents say they're trying to get the kids back to Lenoir City with them.

Meanwhile, many friends and neighbors hold firm to their belief that Eric McLean could never have done what he is accused of had it not been for something as provocative as his wife having her alleged affair with a student.

"He would've never done this, I mean something really had to happen for him to do that," Dyer says.

McLean was released from the hospital on the 16th, one day after the suicide attempt.

Eric McLean remains in the Knox County Detention Center.

A preliminary hearing date is set for March 27th, on that day, the judge will also hear a motion for bond.
