Rat Poison is Source of Pet Food Recall

Knoxville (WVLT) - The company, Menu Foods, revealed today, rat poison was found in the pet food suspected of killing at least 16 cats and dogs.

But, the question remains, how did it get there?

Volunteer TV's Jessa Goddard has the latest on the recall and the increasing number of deaths linked to this lethal toxin.

We've taken calls from several pet owners convinced they fed their pets the very food that caused their deaths.

Their grief, turning to anger that still no criminal investigation has been launched.

The toxin has been identified as aminopterin, which is used to kill rats in some countries.

Scientists say the poison may have been used on wheat imported from China.

While they won't speculate on how the toxin got into Menu Foods' now recalled pet food, they say any amount of this product is too much in food.

There have been several reports of kidney failure in pets that ate the recalled brands. The company has confirmed the deaths of 15 cats and one dog.

Powell, Tennessee, resident Shirley Drinnen says she's convinced her cat, nine-year-old Nipper, ate the food that led to his subsequent death.

"I'm angry about the fact that we got something from somewhere else and nobody tested that product to make sure it was safe before they started testing it with animals, and then these animals had to die, too," says Drinnen.

Shirley Drinnen has not filed a lawsuit against Menu Foods, although, the company is already facing several, including one filed here in East Tennessee.
