(WVLT) - The country's political leaders want you to commit five-minutes a day to prayer, asking God to help heal our nation.
"If my people who are called by my name will humble themselves and pray, and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then when I hear from heaven and will heal their land, forgive their sins and heal their land," Clara Segars says.
Clara Segars believes America needs healing.
"We have slid down the slippery slope and it's scary and I have been praying, 'Lord, forgive us and withhold your judgment for a little bit longer," Segars continues.
Congress is making the same plea -- as they call on the country to unite in prayer.
"If you look at our heritage, the Founding Fathers certainly understood the importance of prayer. If you walk around Washington, or the Capitol, you certainly see reference to God in many, many places and I can't think of a better thing for us to do right now than return to our Creator," Congressman David Davis says.
"I feel like it's so important that our country gets back to it's roots," Segars says.
Church-goers, like Clara, are getting excited about the proposal...
"It will make a difference. It will make a terrific difference if enough Christians pray," she continues.
Her pastor agrees...
"Who would not want to pray for the goodness of their country? It seems, to me, to be a no brainier," Pastor Larry Fields says.
Quoting Psalms, Congressman Davis says praying together is the only way to prove the power of prayer.
"It says 'Blessed is the nation who's God is the Lord'. I certainly know that we've been blessed in America... we're a blessed nation," he says.
