Tennessee's Alexander Plans Run for Second Term

Maryville, Blount County (AP) - Tennessee Senator Lamar Alexander came home to the Foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains to assure hometown folks he plans to seek re-election.

At a breakfast meeting in Maryville Tuesday, Alexander said he wasn't starting his campaign yet, but wanted to make it clear to the people of Tennessee that he would announce when the time comes.

The former governor, US Education Secretary and University of Tennessee President is completing his first term in the Senate.

He says he wants to run again because Congress needs people who understand the need for compromise.

Alexander says he knows how to work across party lines on major issues and is willing to do it.

He cited the war in Iraq, the efforts against terrorism, government spending and affordable health care as issues that neither political party can fix by itself.
