Protect Your Plants From The Freeze

Knoxville (WVLT) - Late Thursday afternoon, employees at Mayo Garden Center started taking in potted plants, so they don't freeze over night. They suggest you start doing the same by dusk to keep your plants healthy over the next few days.

If you have planted anything in the last two or three weeks things like tomato plants, geraniums or impatiens you need to cover those up or bring them inside.

"They'll lose the beauty, they'll turn brown and shrivel up, eventually, and it won't be as pretty," says Claxton Mayo.

How To Protect Plants & Shrubs
Cover or take inside:

  • Anything blooming
  • Any annuals even if not blooming
  • Cover with cloth or newspaper
  • Cover by dusk
  • Uncover in the morning

You're probably going to have to do this for several nights because lows will be below freezing.
