Reserve Deputy Accidentally Shoots Daughter

Loudon, Loudon County (WVLT) - The daughter of a Loudon County reserve officer, accidentally shot by her father, is in guarded condition.

Authorities say 37-year-old James Michael Powers was cleaning his 40 caliber Glock Sunday night, when it went off, hitting his 5-year-old daughter, Chassity, in the abdomen.

Local authorities and the TBI are now investigating the incident.

"Officer Powers is in good standing, Officer Powers has been assured that he can remain in this organization for as long as desires to pending the results of the investigation," says Chief Daryl Smith from the Loudon County Sheriff's Department.

Loudon County officials say it's too early to determine if any rules will change as a result of this incident.

Powers started as a reserve officer in January of this year.

Why would the reserve officer have his 5 year old in the room that he was servicing his gun in to begin with?!!! It demonstrates stupidity on his part to me!!! I sure hope that his daughter is ok!
