Jacksboro, Campbell County (WVLT) - Seventeen months after the crime, the murder of a school administrator and the wounding of two others, the suspect finally heads to trial.
Jury selection is underway in the Kenny Bartley Junior trial in Campbell County.
Volunteer TV's Kim Bedford is at the Campbell County Courthouse continuing to follow this story.
It is standing room only inside the Campbell County courtroom, jury selection for a panel of 12 began around 9:00 a.m. this morning.
So far the pool has been narrowed down to 14, ten women and 4 men.
Retired Judge Jon Blackwood questioned more than 50 potential jurors this morning out of the 150 available, asking if they seen or heard about Kenny Bartley's case
The majority admitted they already formed opinions that would've affected the verdict, of course those people were dismissed. The 14 left have stated they had not form an opinion, even though several said they faintly knew Kenney Bartley's father, Ken Bruce, Gary Seale or Jim Pierce.
The judge made sure no one on the panel was associated with any of the attorneys.
The state and the defense questioned all 14 potential jurors.
Attorney General Paul Phillips asked if the jury would hold Kenny Bartley accountable as an adult even though he was only 14 at the time of the shooting, everyone said they would.
Bartley's Attorney, Mike Hatmaker, made sure the jury understood that the State must prove first degree murder behind a reasonable doubt, referencing murder vs. manslaughter.
Bartley faces up to 51 years in prison if convicted.
The judge is still questioning more jurors, once a jury is formed, opening statements will begin.
We'll have updates throughout the day on VolunteerTV.com and on WVLT beginning on FIRST at 4:00.
