Washington (AP) -- Ford is recalling more than 500,000 Escape sport utility vehicles.
The auto maker says it's received about 50 reports of engine fires linked to corrosion on antilock brake connectors. Ford says there has been no reports of accidents or injuries.
The mechanical problem had been under investigation by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Water and contaminants such as brake fluid or road salt could get into the connector and cause corrosion, which could lead to a warning indicator lighting up, an open fuse, or in some cases, smoking, melting or burning.
Dealers will inspect vehicles for corrosion and replace connectors if necessary.
The recall doesn't apply to hybrid models of the Escape.
