New York (AP) -- CBS has fired radio host Don Imus.
The company was under growing pressure to terminate the host after he called the Rutgers Women's basketball team a group of "nappy-headed hos" last week.
CBS President and Chief Executive Officer Leslie Moonves says there's been a lot of discussion about "the effect language like this has on our young people, particularly young women of color trying to make their way in this society."
Moonves says that consideration "weighed most heavily" as the company made its decision.
Meanwhile, the host's annual radiothon charity drive has raised more than $1.3 million. Producers for the radiothon say volunteers were getting about 200 more pledges per hour than they were last year.
