LOCAL 8 WEATHER ALERT: Strong to severe storms are possible Tuesday afternoon and evening...especially on the Plateau. The main threats are damaging winds, small hail, heavy downpours, and frequent lightning.
Gatlinburg, Sevier County (AP) -- It will be a while before US 441 over the Smoky Mountains reopens.
Rangers closed it Sunday evening because of snow, but found hundreds of trees down this morning, blocking the highway.
National Park Service Spokesman Bob Miller says the trees have fallen in an area in North Carolina near the Tennessee border, just east of Newfound Gap.
Rangers aren't yet sure what happened, but miller says the trees could have been felled by a downburst of air as the storm that produced the snow moved through the mountains Sunday.
