Hogs Fed Contaminated Pet Food May Have Entered Food Supply

Washington (AP) -- Federal officials say fewer than 350 hogs that may have eaten contaminated pet food are believed to have entered the food supply for humans.

The potential risk to human health is said to be very low.

About six thousand hogs may have ingested the salvaged pet food, and the Agriculture Department says it appears that a large majority of them are still on the farms where they're being raised. The government has told the three states involved, California, New York and South Carolina, that it won't allow meat from any of the hogs that ate the feed to enter the food supply.

The government says it will compensate farmers if they kill the hogs exposed to the tainted pet food.
