Pentagon (AP) -- The Pentagon says it's holding one of al-Qaeda's most senior and most experienced operatives at Guantanamo Bay.
A pentagon spokesman says the man is an Iraqi (Abd al-Hadi al-Iraqi) who was captured while attempting to return to his native country. He was turned over to the Pentagon this week by the CIA.
The Pentagon isn't saying where or when he was captured, or by whom.
He's suspected of plotting attacks on US Forces in Afghanistan from across the border in Pakistan. He's also accused of leading an effort to assassinate Pakistan's president, General Pervez Musharraf.
The Pentagon also says at some point he had met with al-Qaeda members in Iran.
