Fire at Atomic Motor Speedway

Kingston, Roane County (WVLT) - It's been a major part of local racing for decades.

Now part of the Atomic Speedway is destroyed after it caught fire Monday evening.

Firefighters tell WVLT shortly after 7:00 p.m., the speedway grandstand caught fire as it was being dismantled with a welding tool.

The Speedway was recently rezoned and sold to a trucking company looking to build in that location.

Crews were on site Monday dismantling.

"Cutting the bolts off the bleachers with a cutting torch and set the boards on fire," said Donnie Eblen from the East Roane County Volunteer Fire Department.

Only one person was on site at the time, and we're told he was not injured.

I really hated to see the atomic get sold to crete but I was really amazed about what happened Monday night. The blechers were the second thing to get taken away from the atomic. The grand stands represented the finish line and they were also checkered. I hated watcching it burn and not being able to do anything but watch the firefighters try to put it out.

Since you have not been told how the fire started it just seems convenient that it was to be destroyed any way & looks like this is an easier way to get rid of it.
