Knoxville (WVLT) - Authorities are investigating a body burned beyond recognition discovered around 1:00 p.m. Wednesday afternoon just off Middlebrook Pike.
A person driving by the area called 911 to report a grass fire.
While members of the Knoxville Fire Department were putting out the fire, they found the burning body.
Knoxville Police call the area "a homeless camp."
"A tent, some tarps, they have like a grill for cooking that they've set up underneath some brush back there. So it is being used as a homeless camp at this point," says Darrell DeBusk, Knoxville Police Spokesman.
The camp is located between two sets of railroad tracks less than 100 yards from Proctor Street.
Police say it's way too early to speculate if this was criminal or an accident.
The body has been taken to the Forensic Center for an autopsy.
