Knoxville (WVLT) - Thousands of students will be impacted by the rezoning plan, and while some may adjust to change very well, others may have a more difficult time.

Medical Reporter Jessa Goddard has more on the emotions they're likely to experience during the transition.

Regardless of how you feel about the change, try to be positive for your child.

Positive expectations from you, will result in positive experiences for your child.

When the Knox County School Board passed the plan on a five to four vote Wednesday night, the audience booed.

Some parents even yelled out comments.

"And some anger about being forced to do this against your will, you really didn't have a choice in this. And that, I think, again, is the crux of the matter," Psychiatrist Doctor John Robertson says regardless of how you feel about the plan, it's important to acknowledge your child's feelings, even if they're negative. "The normal reactions that any of us have are going to be grief at the loss of your old school, old teachers that you liked. Some anxiety or fear about new situations and what's going to happen."

Expect your child to feel both scared and excited at the same time.

And validate their emotions, so they feel they can come to you when they have problems.

But be especially aware of changes in their attitude and behavior.

"If you start seeing signs of depression, withdrawal, isolation, irritableness, sleep difficulty, eating changes," says Dr. Robertson.

During the school transition, try to keep your home routine as normal as possible to provide some stability.

Now that you have some idea as to what to expect emotionally from your child, know there are some things you can do to ease his or her concerns.
