Seymour Residents Say Proposed Ball Park Isn't Practical

Seymour (WVLT) - Folks living on north Knob Creek Road in Sevier County say a proposed park in their community isn't practical.

Neighbors say the Optimist Club is leasing this land from Sevier County, and they plan to build a sports complex complete with softball fields, indoor/outdoor basketball courts and soccer fields.

Residents are worried they won't be able to use it because it will be gated and used mostly for ballgames and tournaments.

"The residents of this area cannot go and use that at anytime they want. We'd love to have a park over there - walking path, dog park, playground, picnic tables. That would be wonderful, however, it's not going to be that," resident Chris V. Eecke said.

"There's actually a community park up off Chapman that would accommodate what they want to do here," resident Edgar Davis said.

The community has held several meetings and have spoke with commissioners about the problems. They say this fight isn't over yet.

Residents who live on North Knob Creek Road do not want the proposed gated ball park because of the high traffic volume. Last week another car went off the road (this is a common occurence)and into the creek that flows directly beside the proposed ball park. The narrow rural road cannot accommodate the number of cars that the proposed new ball park will bring. The ball park located off of Chapman Highway in Seymour has a perfect layout for a gated sports complex and, in the past, has been offered to Sevier County by the current owners but the commissioners turned down the generous offer. Ask the commissioners why the offer was declined more than once. The residents of North Knob Creek would like to have a small community park with walking trails, a playground, picnic tables but not a version of Neyland Stadium in our front/back yard.
