Knoxville (WVLT) - Every mom deserves some appreciation on Mothers Day. That's the message area shelters are trying to get across with their second annual "Relax With Ross Day."
As Volunteer TV’s Stacy McCloud shows us, the Mothers Day event is a time for not only these women to feel beautiful, but also a way for the community to become more aware of the many moms out there in need.
Put a group of moms in a room together and threes one thing they'll all tell you.
"It's hard sometimes when you want to take a break and can't,” says Brandy Farmer, mother of two.
Raising children sure isn't easy.
"My kids keep me busy, a lot to do,” says Carmenita Brown, a mother of five.
Despite motherhood's obstacles, the rewards seem to speak for themselves.
"It always gives me a reason to smile. There is just not anything like it. The feeling of being needed,” says Brandy.
Still, it's nice to have a little alone time. That's why Knox Area Rescue Ministries and the Salvation Army hope a haircut, manicure, and total make-up makeover will help.
"Anytime I get a chance to help somebody else, I love it,” Danny Kivett is part of the Relax With Ross team making women like Carmenita Brown feel beautiful.
"Very pampered. It makes me feel good, I can't stop smiling,” Carmenita says.
Right now the state has custody of her five children, making this Mothers Day a little bitter sweet.
So while some R&R is certainly nice, Brown says the message these shelters are trying to send, that every mom not be forgotten, is what means so much.
"It’s a slow process, but it's going to be okay because I’m getting the help I need,” says Carmenita.
Browns certainly not alone, most women here have dreams of much more than a new look, they have hope for a new life.
Meaning these moments of pampering go much further than what's simply skin deep.
"It's very special,” says Brandy.
Each mom was also sent with bags full of all sorts of goodies.
