Washington (AP) -- The Energy Department says technicians have been dismantling nuclear warheads much faster than had been expected.
Officials say 50 percent more warheads have been taken apart during the last eight months than in all of the previous year.
Thomas D'Agostino calls it good news from a global nuclear safety standpoint because there will be fewer nuclear weapons in the world.
Some uranium components are worked on at the Y-12 complex near Oak Ridge.
The weapons' plutonium is physically separated from its conventional explosive at the department's Pantex plant near Amarillo, Texas.
