Maryville, Blount County (WVLT) - With the lack of rain over the past few weeks, Maryville residents are being urged to conserve water.
Volunteer TV's Kim Bedford takes a closer look at how you can conserve in your community so restrictions aren't put in place.
"There's just an overflow of water usage,” says Pam Arnett from the Maryville Public Information Office.
Spinklers, hoses, swimming pools, "We haven't really put any restrictions on our water usage and we do have a contingency plan if that would happen,” Arnett says.
The City of Maryville is hoping it doesn't have to restrict residents water usage in the midst of this dry spell. "We really aren't having major problems, but we have put some tips on our website,” Arnett says.
Such as cut back watering your trees, plants and landscape. Cut your grass at least three inches high to shade the roots, Keep a gallon of drinking water in the fridge, and turn off the water while brushing your teeth and shaving.
"If we conserve now, I reckon we won't have a big impact,” Stephen Hand says he's doing his part to conserve water, but his rose bushes have taken quite a beating from the sun. "I just don't use a lot of water as often."
Hand carefully waters his plants about four times a week. "I usually water it until it starts puddling, that way when I stop, the water will seep in and hit the roots."
Mother Nature just hasn't supplied the drink his flowers need. "When it rains it pours, but I know we've been back like eleven inches now."
But thanks to some thoughtful residents, Maryville isn't completely dried up.
"We're just blessed because we have had less than normal rainfall, but really for right now, we're still in good shape,” Arnett says.
And in the meantime, "I'm praying everyday that the rain would come,” Stephen says.
