Knoxville (WVLT) -- New state laws regarding pets also went into affect today.
Included in the new animal laws that now says it is a misdemeanor to remove an electronic collar or microchip implant from a dog without permission from its owner.
"I think they are wonderful, I think its reflective of our population base getting older," said Todd Birdwell, a dog owner. "People are without the children, we are more empty-nesters, and I think society is wanting to put more emphasis on dogs and cats."
Tennessee is also now one of the first states to allow order's of protection to be extended to a pet.
