Drought damage gets senator's attention

WHITWELL, Tenn. (AP) -- After months of drought, Glenn Blevins welcomed Senator Bob Corker's visit to his farm in southeast Tennessee, even if it doesn't soften his crop losses.

Blevins said today after Corker toured his farm that the fact he was concerned enough to come was "encouraging."

Tennessee Farm Bureau President Lacy Upchurch joined Corker on the tour of the Sequatchie County farm about 30 miles west of Chattanooga.

Blevins said Corker promised to do what he can. He said Corker did not make any definite promise of aid beyond the availability of low-interest loans.

Blevins said he has lost hundreds of acres of corn to drought since an Easter weekend freeze destroyed much of his wheat.

With rainfall down about 16 inches for the year in the Chattanooga area, Corker met with Blevins and other farmers one day after one inch of rain fell on Blevins' farm.

Corker also met with nursery operators in Warren County before town meetings at Pikeville and Dayton.
