Former Ragsdale Aide Files Discrimination Complaint

By  |

Knoxville (WVLT) – A top aide to Knox County Mike Ragsdale who recently resigned amid the purchase card scandal now alleges that she was terminated because of race.

Margie Loyd, who was Ragsdale’s Chief Executive Assistant before being transferred to Community Services, filed a charge of discrimination with the Tennessee Human Rights Commission and the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.

According to the filing, Knox County Mayor Mike Ragsdale told Loyd “on at least two occasions that the Chairman of the Knox County Commission and other Knox County Commissioners did not like African-Americans.” The allegation emphasizes that at one point Mayor Ragsdale told Loyd that the Commission Chairman, Scott Moore, “wants you gone.”

The allegations go on to detail a meeting with Mayor Ragsdale and the Knox County Human Resources Department where Loyd was allegedly told she would take medical leave and resign.

According to her statement, Loyd says she never had a medical condition to warrant the leave, but that she was told that the leave would allow her to claim her benefits and pension.

Loyd resigned last month amid accusations of charging a personal trip to her Knox County purchase card.

WVLT is awaiting comment from Knox County Mayor Mike Ragsdale’s office in response to these allegations. As soon as we hear back from his office, we will pass that information along to you.
