A LOCAL 8 WEATHER ALERT is in effect as rain showers change to snow showers tonight into Friday morning. While accumulation may be small or non-existent, (0 to 0.5 inches), where snow showers persist, it's expected to occur during the morning commute, which could slow down other drivers. Please take note. Winter Weather Advisories for the Smokies are in effect until Noon Friday for 1 to 3 inches of snow.
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- A preliminary inspection has found no immediate safety concerns with five Tennessee bridges with similar designs as the Minnesota bridge which collapsed.
Tennessee Department of Transportation Commissioner Gerald Nicely ordered inspections of the deck truss structures after last week's bridge collapse, which killed at least five and injured 100.
TDOT bridge teams checked the five similar bridges in Jefferson, Knox, Sullivan, Carter and DeKalb counties, examining cross beams and photographing potential problem spots.
The results were then compared to the last inspection.
TDOT inspects all the state's 19,519 bridges every two years.
TDOT already intends to replace two of the five deck truss bridges -- the city of Kingsport-owned Netherland Inn Bridge in Sullivan County and the Interstate 40 bridge spanning the French Broad River in Jefferson County.
