KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) – Wednesday night marked the opening ceremony in the Global Finals portion of Destination Imagination.
The tournament-based education program has been held in Knoxville for each of the last ten years.
On Wednesday night, more than one thousand students from across the nation and around the world packed the Thompson Boling Arena for the ceremony.
Among the biggest competitions involved in the finals is a project in which students have to build a device to launch an object over a barrier and into an unknown landing zone.
“It's all about bragging rights, these kids are really about team work, but they are also about showing their stuff,” said Matthew Arts, director of marketing and public relations for Destination Imagination. “You'd really be amazed what an elementary school girl can do with a welding iron and a splash shield. It's really spectacular."
More than 15,000 people will be in Knoxville through the weekend for the finals. Nearly all area hotel rooms are booked and the event is expected to add around $24 million to the local economy.
