Bad For Business?

Knoxville (WVLT) Labor day marks the unofficial end to the summer.

Did the heat and high gas prices affect summer businesses?

WVLT Volunteer TV's Liz Tedone has more.

If it was the unofficial last day of summer, you wouldn't know it.

All around East Tennessee families were taking advantage of a long weekend near the water.

Boat rentals at Cove Park in Farragut have been high all season.

Richard Lee says, "during the summertime, it was really busy all the time. Normally we had two people working here. We're in the process right now of selling our rental boats."

While public pools are already closed, it's never too late in the season to picnic in the park and swim in Fort Loudon Lake.

The boating business has been booming this year.

At Concord Marina, James Fish says his numbers are up 20-30 percent over last year.

"I think it's mainly the weather. The weather has cooperated and had some beautiful days and people are out boating."

And even though gas prices may have peaked at the pump early on in the summer, gas at the marina hasn't gone over $3.50 a gallon.

A bargain if you're a boater.

And in the Great Smoky Mountains, businesses were expecting an 11 percent increase in tourism traffic.

All because gas prices are 26 cents lower this year than last, making that drive through the winding back roads more popular.
