McMinn Deputy Uses Taser to Keep Man from Jumping Off Bridge

ATHENS, Tenn. (AP) -- A McMinn County sheriff's deputy tried to talk a man from the rail of a bridge and used a Taser to subdue him when his attention was diverted.

Deputy Caleb Martin says he arrived in response to a call Sunday night to find 26-year-old Mark Dockery swinging a metal pipe at motorists. Martin says when Dockery saw him, the man ran to a bridge over a small stream and stood on the rail.

The report states Dockery was drunk and threatened to jump and take the officer with him, if he got too close.

Martin talked Dockery back from the outside bridge rail and -- when the man's attention was diverted by another officer's flashlight -- the deputy stunned him with a Taser to prevent him from jumping.
