Academy Sports opening Knoxville doors

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- Knoxville's first Academy Sports and Outdoors opens its doors Friday morning at 8.

On Thursday, the store celebrated its grand opening and helped kids from the Boys and Girls Club.

Store managers and new employees cut the red ribbon outside. Inside, 30 kids from the club went on a $100 dollar shopping spree.

The southeastern sports retailer employees about 150 people and sells athletic and hunting gear - everything from golf equipment to basketball goals, brand name apparel and shoes.

Employees expect the store to become a popular spot.

"We have had for the last 2 weeks customers coming to doors and phones ringing off the hooks. So I think it's going to be absolutely fabulous," says Jerry Shepher with Academy.
