Alcantara powers Smokies to 8-6 win over Lookouts

KODAK, Tenn. (release) -- Arismendy Alcantara’s sixth inning home run led an 11-hit attack that propelled the Tennessee Smokies to a 8-6 win over the Chattanooga Lookouts in front of 4,879 at Smokies Park. The win puts Tennessee at 4-5 on the season. Chattanooga drops to 3-6.

In a game that at the start appeared to be a pitcher’s duel, the Smokies jumped on Chattanooga starter Rob Rasmussen in the third inning. Kyle Hendricks led off the inning with a walk and Ronald Torreyes was hit by a pitch. Following a single by Alcantara to load the bases, Justin Bour singled home Hendricks and Torreyes and later in the inning, Rubi Silva tripled to score Alcantara and third baseman Christian Villanueva to give Tennessee a 4-0 lead.

After scoring a single run in the fifth inning, the Smokies added three more in the sixth on Alcantara’s second home run of the season, a three-run shot, to give Tennessee an 8-1 advantage.

Tennessee starter Kyle Hendricks (1-0) picked up his first Double-A victory, allowing an unearned run on five hits over, walking three and fanning one over six strong innings.

Hendricks would give way to reliever A.J. Morris in the seventh. Following a walk and a base hit, Los Angeles Dodgers top prospect Yasiel Puig hit a three-run home run to center field to narrow the Smokies lead to 8-4.

Morris would allow two more runs in the eighth, but reliever Frank Batista stopped Chattanooga’s momentum to pick up his first save of the season.

The Smokies swiped two more bags with Villanueva and Ha both stealing bases. Bour was caught stealing, thus ending the Smokies streak of consecutive successful stolen base attempts at 13.

In his first Double-A start, Torreyes went 2-3 with a walk and made some great defensive plays at second base.

The Smokies and Lookouts will conclude their five-game set on Sunday afternoon at 2:00 at Smokies Park. Tennessee will send righty Dae-Eun Rhee (0-0, 2.08) to the mound and will face lefty Onelki Garcia (0-0, 2.25). Sunday will feature the Smokies’ annual Little League Clinic from 12-1. Gates will open at 11:30 a.m. For tickets and more information, fans can visit www.smokiesbaseball.com or call (865) 286-2300.
