Alcoa police identify woman killed in apartment fire

ALCOA, Tenn. (WVLT) -- Authorities identified the 51 year-old woman killed in a fire at an Alcoa apartment complex last Thursday. Firefighter found Joany Diane Burger unconscious inside one of the apartments.

They attempted CPR before she was taken to Blount Memorial Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Officials had withheld Burger's name pending an notification of the family.

Alcoa firefighter Dan Harris injured his leg after falling from the back of a fire engine while pulling the fire hose off of the truck. He had surgery over the weekend and is home recuperating.

According to the city police dept., emergency crews were called to the home, 340 Sanderson Street, shortly after 2:00 a.m. when a neighbor spotted smoke coming from the apartment.

A preliminary investigation has ruled the fire an accident.

Several other tenants were displaced by the blaze and were helped by the American Red Cross.
