Anderson County church hands out 470 backpacks

CLINTON, Tenn. (WVLT) -- The first day of school is right around the corner for many East Tennessee students.

Some kids are excited, while others are a little bummed summer is coming to an end.

Bethel Baptist Church thought it would get kids in the mood by throwing a block party Saturday morning.

They gave away 470 backpacks with school supplies and 17 bikes.

"People in the church donate them. We go, it's kind of a family outing, we'll go from here to Atlanta and find stores that are giving discounts on them," says Tim Parrott.

There were also bounce houses, food, music, and other games.

Organizers say the event continues to grow each year.
