Two people killed in early morning crash on Norris Freeway

KNOX COUNTY, Tenn. (WVLT) -- A young couple was killed after their SUV hit a utility pole on Norris Freeway near Old Racoon Valley Drive early Tuesday morning.

"The speed at which it was going, and the damage that was caused just from the crash was very violent," said Sgt. Applebea with Tennessee Highway Patrol.

When they struck the utility pole, the vehicle went into a spin and they then hit an embankment.

Troopers say the victims were thrown from the vehicle because they were not wearing their seat belts.

"It's just sad to see people lose their lives on any road way any day of the week," said Sgt. Applebea.

No names have been released at this time.
