BLOUNT COUNTY, Tenn. (WVLT)-- From car wrecks to shootings and everything in between, more than two dozen men and women are training for the worst.

Thirty recruits are undergoing rigorous training at Blount County's Law Enforcement Training Academy. It's the largest class the academy has ever had.

"We're trying to train combat shooters. Officers that can use their head and use it smartly in the event that they find themselves in a shooting type situation," said Capt. Jeff Burchfield with the Blount County Sheriff's Office.

The recruits are on their 6th week of the 11-week program. Instructors from other local agencies are helping prepare them for the line of duty.

"Driving -- outside of this past year-- has killed more law enforcement officials than fire arms. So, it's extremely important what these guys are learning right now on the track," Det. Gabe Mullinix with the Knox County Sheriff's Office.

The local officers are from various different agencies, but the goal is the same.

"We can't wait to be out on the streets with everybody else," said Audrey Burross with UT Police.

The class graduates November 22nd.
