Buddy's Race draws thousands to fight cancer

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) - Thousands hit the streets in downtown Knoxville Sunday to raise awareness and money for local cancer efforts. The 19th annual Buddy's Race Against Cancer aimed to raise more than $400,000 in its one day event.

The 5K run and walk drew racers and young and old alike. Dozens of survivors were there in red shirts to give their accounts and stories of celebration and survival.

"I would've never have gotten through this when she was 2. She was my strength and my hope then. Never did I think I'd have to go through this on the other side with her," said Melissa Reasor.

Reasor and her daughter Sarah are both thyroid cancer survivors. They were diagnosed fourteen years apart, but they say they're each others best support.

"It has a whole new meaning this year, watching my daughter do this. It means she's a wonderful, wonderful woman, determined, and we've done it together," said Reasor.

All funds raised from Sunday's race will go to local cancer care and education.
