SEVIERVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- Dozens of people from around Sevier County gathered on Friday to unveil a new Civil War marker.
The new marker will be on the Walters State Community College campus in Sevierville. The marker gives people information about the Battle of Fair Garden. The 3 day battle took place in an 8 mile area around the marker site.
County leaders hope the site will add to the history of the area.
"The Civil War was brutal on this county that after it was over they kind of tried to forget it, so little was said about it except for the few people that tried to collect artifacts," said Carroll McMahan, Sevier County Historian.
The Battle of Fair Garden was a minor battle of the American Civil War, occurring on January 27, 1864. The marker is now part of the Civil War trails.
