Community rallies for spelling bee winner

SOUTH KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) - A special little girl is preparing for Saturday's regional spelling bee.

Fourth grader Meghan McCarty won her spelling bee at Dogwood Elementary back in January.

What's more remarkable is that she has autism and cerebral palsy, which makes it different for her to even tie her shoes.

Her mom says she studies everyday, but was excited for the pep rally, when all she wanted to do was eat cake and dance.

"I try not to cry when I talk about it, because she's just an amazing kid. It's a special moment for her, and it's a big deal for everybody and all the support that we've gotten in the community really means a lot to us," said Tiffiany McCarty.

The regional spelling bee starts tomorrow at 9:30 at UT. The winner goes onto the national competition in Washington DC.
