Comptroller: $100,000 stolen from TN counties, 1/2 of 2011

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- More than $100,000 was stolen from Tennessee's county governments last year, according to the state Comptroller's Office - and that's a good sign. The $106,495.27 in reported new thefts in 2012 is almost exactly half of the previous year's total.

“While it is good to see that the number of new thefts was down last year and a substantial amount of money was recovered, there’s absolutely no reason to be complacent about these statistics,” Comptroller Justin P. Wilson said. “It’s important for our local government officials to constantly remain on guard against the potential theft of taxpayer money."

County governments were able to recover nearly $280,000 last year, pushing down the total amount of uncollected funds to around $560,000.

The numbers are culled from a county-by-county breakdown of cash shortages, based on the annual financial reports and special reports produced by the Comptroller's Division of Local Government Audit and private accounting firms.

The report also explains how the shortages are detected, how the money was stolen, corrective steps taken by the counties, and the legal action taken against those responsible for the thefts.
