Weather Alert: Widespread Frost, Hard Freeze

Corker warns of risks of continuing war in Syria, calls aid "high priority"

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- Sen. Bob Corker is sounding the alarm about the potential risks of the ongoing civil war in Syria spilling over into neighboring states. Corker, the ranking Republican on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, also called international humanitarian assistance for refugees 'a high priority.'

“Millions of Syrians have lost everything in this tragic war, and we and our allies should stand with them to help keep extremism at bay and halt the slide toward chaos in the region," said Corker.

"The day after Assad falls won't be easy, so we have to be prepared to deal with what is likely to be a very complex challenge," he continued.

In September of last year, Corker met with members of the Syrian opposition, fighting to topple the Assad regime, while visiting a refugee camp on the Turkish-Syrian border.

"I’ve witnessed the human suffering occurring and the threat of the conflict’s spillover into neighboring countries as it continues," said Corker.

"The crisis has significant implications for regional stability and ultimately U.S. security given the increasing influence of extremist elements inside Syria."

A month after his trip to the Turkish border, Corker went to Jordan to see the Za’atri refugee camp.

"I'm very concerned we're not doing enough to think about and prepare for what a long term challenge Syria will be for us and for the region and to bolster the ability of friendly governments to weather the storm that is coming,” concluded Corker.
