KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- A couple is safe after their boat broke down on Watts Bar Lake in Kingston and left them stranded for hours.
Shawn Goins says he and his wife were about five miles from shore when the boat stopped working.
The couple tried to paddle back to shore with the only oar on board, but weren't moving fast enough.
They called for help as afternoon faded away, and a rescue squad pulled them shore.
He told us, "We tried to turn it in to something romantic, like something off of The Notebook, but it didn't work out so well. We got a little worried, but it worked out for the best."
This was the first time the couple had taken the boat on the lake, and they were not injured.
Shawn says he wife probably won't be back in the boat anytime soon.
