Crimetracker: Robbery reports turn out of be hoax

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) Federal authorities helping the Knoxville Police Department find whomever falsely reported bank robbery Wednesday afternoon.

Someone called 911 claiming that four masked men were in the Suntrust Bank on Broadway, armed with shotguns.

They also reported that shots had been fired and at least one person was hurt.

KPD responded and shutdown the bank but quickly figured out it was a prank.

Police say it's going to be tough to find who's responsible.

"It's actually very difficult. I'm hopeful that some of the technology we have we will be able to assist us in determining who the perpetrator of this was," said KPD Chief David Rausch.

If police find out who's responsible, they could face federal charges.
