SWEETWATER, Tenn. (WVLT) -- A Sweetwater woman faces first degree murder charges stemming from the death of her husband, John W. Coffman, who died in December. According to the Monroe County Sheriff's Office, Karen Coffman was arrested on Wednesday and is scheduled to appear in court next Tuesday.
In early December, Mr. Coffman was found not breathing in his home, 255 Thompson Farm Road. His estranged wife said she fell asleep around noon and awoke to find him unresponsive.
When authorities arrived, they found a feeding tube inserted in his stomach and an empty bottle of liquid hydrocodone next to him. The officer also reported another bottle of liquid hydrocodone was lying on the floor as well as empty bottles of valium and anti-depressants.
The initial investigation determined the death was a result of a prescribed pain medication. Later, information surfaced leading to the arrest of Ms. Coffman.
Coffman is being held without bail at the Monroe Co. Jail.
