KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT)-- Knoxville police are investigating a shooting in East Knoxville that left two men injured.

According to KPD, the men were shot as they stood outside an apartment just after 9 p.m. on South Bell St.

Witnesses told police a car drove down South Bell St. toward McCalla Ave. with someone firing shots out of the passenger side. It appears there may have been an argument in the area, according to witnesses.

According to police, one man was shot in the back and the other was shot on his head. Officers don't believe the two injured men were involved in the initial dispute.

Police did locate a car with a New Jersey license plate shortly after hearing the gun shots, but the driver failed to stop. Officers stopped pursuing the suspect when the driver started driving in the wrong lane on Cherry St.

The investigation is ongoing.
